Day 19 : The home stretch

Col de l'Homme Mort, Col de l'Aire Deï Masco

We paid for the campsite at one of the few French people that speak English. I almost slipped when we slowly cycled through a turn with sand on the road. During the first 50 kilometers we cycled a big loop around the Ventoux. There were a lot of other cyclists. My chain was utterly worn out and squeaked, but that was fine, as it was our last day. We had planned to cycle 100 km today and 40 km tomorrow before taking the train. If we could manage to cycle 140 km today, we would be able to take an earlier train. We decided to figure that out tonight. There were no huge mountains in those remaining 140 km, but there were nine smaller climbs.

Everything went smoothly, but I didn't feel like cycling anymore. It was the last day and we would have to spend the next 1,5 or 2 days on a train. During the afternoon, we passed the col de l'Homme Mort, which means 'col of the dead man'.

Around six we arrived at the campsite that had been 100 km away. We still had enough time to complete the last 40 km we had planned to cycle the following day. In a village we went to the bakery to get some more bread. Bram wanted to send a text but found out his credit was spent. He had just enough left to call home to ask if they could put on more. After hearing the voicemail, those last dimes were also spent. I had to text home so my parents could call Bram's parents to ask if they could send him more credit. The last col of the vacation was worthy of a picture.

We arrived at the campsite in Manosque. There was a guy I could barely understand asking for my ID card, he would keep it until we paid in the morning. However, that would prevent us from leaving as early as possible. We went back later to ask if we could pay right away, which was fine. Then we took a shower and washed our clothes so we wouldn't smell so much that we would get kicked off the train.

Distance cycled : 140 km.
