Haute Route - Day 5

As we were not allowed a good night's sleep this vacation, we woke up around 6 am to excavators and jackhammers breaking up the camping driveway. That was just great. Fortunately, the first part of today's section would be relatively flat. We packed our gear and ate breakfast at a bakery. Navigating the village took some effort, but we eventually found the correct route. After these tough first days, Diane was definitely more tired than we had hoped. The jet leg, all the climbing, and being at a high altitude made it not easy.

Unfortunately, we had more climbing to do while walking from one village to the next. The views were very nice, though, as we passed through Alpine meadows. Again, we would have likely stopped sooner if there had been more places to camp and/or meet my parents. Tired but happy to have covered a good distance, we arrived at their camper in a parking lot. The village was nice and next to a high mountain. According to the route, we next had to climb a massive 1665m elevation gain. To spend some more time with my parents and allow Diane some rest before starting the most remote section of the route, we decided to take the cable cars up the next day.

There wasn't a campsite in the village, nor the two before that. For a while, we considered leaving the village and trying to find a place to camp in the surrounding forests, but most of those were privately owned, steep, and had no open spaces. Also, no tents were allowed in the parking lot where my parents were staying, and every single hotel in the village was sold out, according to their websites.

There was little my parents could do to help, and it was getting dark, so they returned to their camper. I really wasn't sure where Diane and I could sleep and started to regret not picking a more remote area to hike, as dealing with this every evening was getting frustrating. Fortunately, we eventually found a hotel with a room left. That night might have been our only good night of sleep during the entire trip.
