Haute Route - Day 10 and afterward
We packed our gear the following day and took two buses and a train to return to the airport. The first bus ride was especially beautiful and involved a very long descent; we had been really high up in the mountains. Besides getting food poisoning on the flight home, the return journey went smoothly.

This year's route had been a bit too tough on Diane, but she had still done a great job. The views were beautiful and seeing my parents several times had been nice. We had also been fortunate with the weather, except for the day we were on the remote mountain plateau. Hiking with very light gear had been comfortable most of the time, but I do not think I will do that again. One of our sleeping mats had broken, my backpack's shoulder strap had torn off, our tent had felt not sufficiently safe in bad weather, and back home, I saw that the soles of one of my shoes had started to come loose. To put this in comparison, during all my other hikes and cycling trips combined, the only piece of equipment that ever broke was another Exped mattress where one of the ridges had similarly detached. Especially on remote hikes, I would much rather carry a few kilos extra than worry about equipment breaking. Hopefully, my next hike will be longer and in a more remote area again, as it's much nicer not to have to worry about where to camp.
